Beauty, Makeup, Fashion& Style...

Add some COLOR to your Makeup Look

The easiest way to color-ize your makeup look is to select a focal point. Choose what facial feature to accentuate... the choice is usually either the eyes or the lips.

EYES

Add a complimentary selection of eye shadow color to the eyelid, and lightly blend the color out toward the crease of the eye.

LIPS

Add your choice of a complimentary lipstick or lip gloss to the inset of the upper & lower lip, and blend the color outwards toward the perimeter of the lips for a soft wash of color.

(if your lipstick is prone to "feathering" or "bleeding" you may want to use a lip liner in the same shade as the lip stick or lip gloss you plan to apply. This will keep your lip stick/gloss in place longer and also give it longer wearability)

It's not hard to toss a lip color or an eyeshadow into your makeup bag. Doing so can give you instant access to a fresh new look. You can take your look from daytime sassy to night-time sexy, simply by adding a little pop of color to either your eyes or lips.

Try this makeup tip the next time you need to take your look from "work" to "after work special"!!!

Luscious Photo shoot Lips

The above image as taken at night, in my living room, with my 5.0mp Android phone camera.

Now, you may say to yourself... "ha ha, it looks like it too"!... however, details matter and if I can take a picture this good looking of my work, with a crappy phone cam (as opposed to it being photographed by a professional photog with a professional camera) then this is what I would consider very good work.

And WHY would I consider this such a good example???...

(TIP: It has NOTHING to do with the fact that this is my makeup work.)

The reason I think the above image is an example of really good work is beacuse of the effort in executing the look as closely as possible to a Revlon or L'Oreal lipstick magazine ad without having had the benefit of any retouching or editing whatsoever.

Paying particular attention to moisturizing and basing the lips, selecting the right lip color (one that is complimentary to the skintone) precision application and layering of the lip color as well as the lip gloss, making sure that the application is well proportioned /balanced and then standing back to take that final look at your work... (adjusting & amending where necessary) before deciding that your job is done... is what makes it an example of good work..

As a makeup artist, I take my craft very seriously... which means I put great effort into perfecting a makeup look as much as possible BEFORE my model gets on set with the photographer. Some may disagree, but even in the age of Photo Shop, I believe it is my job to assist the photographer by helping to create a look that will require as little as possible in the way of PS post-production.

Oprah says, "Live your best life" and I say... "Do your best work... always."

the ONE item a girl *must* have in her makeup bag??...

... EYEBROW PENCIL! Yep, that's it!

... EYEBROW PENCIL. It's the ONE item a girl *must* have in her makeup bag.

Even though a brow-less makeup look has been all the rage lately on the fashion runways... unless YOU are actually going to be on a runway, the browless look may not be the best look for you.

I know someone is thinking... besides all that runway & fashion stuff, why isn't the "one" must-have-item something like... mascara or lipstick?

The reason is simple...

It's because: eyebrows frame the face.

As beautiful as your eyeshape, eyelashes, cheek bone structure or lip shape may be, none of these features bring instant presence and balance to your face... however, the eyebrows do!

TIP: experiment with different shades of eyebrow pencil or shadow. Try them in shades from dark-brown to light blonde to see what shade suits you the best. Brown tones offer a softer and more natural alternative to the standard black eyebrow pencil.

Also: be aware of whether or not the shade of brown you are experimenting with is a neutral brown tone or a warm brown tone, as this will directly impact whether or not that particular shade works well with your skintone. If you are hesitant to experiment on your own, you can always take a trip to your local makeup counter and ask the makeup artist to help you find your most complimentary brow pencil/shadow.

So, the next time you run out of the house bare-faced, and then decide (after you've parked in the grocery store parking lot) that you should have done something to your face... remember to whip out the eyebrow pencil and give yourself a quickie!... (a quick eyebrow application, that is!) You'll quickly see why... this is the ONE item a girl *must* have in her makeup bag!

QUICK FACE

Quick!... where's my Face?! (...your makeup face, that is!)

If you still have a TON of makeup items in your bag, then you may have no clue as to how to apply your "Quick Face" in a makeup emergency. But have no fear, it's really very simple.

This is all you need:

  1. Brow Liner
  2. Eye Liner
  3. Mascara
  4. Eye shadow
  5. Lipstick, lip gloss or tinted lip balm
  6. Foundation or Tinted Moisturizer
  7. Makeup Brushes

Brow liner - to fill in gaps or create more shape

Eye liner - to accentuate the shape of the eye. For a fresh look, apply to the upper lid only.

Mascara - to accentuate lashes and open up the eye.

Eye shadow - to enhance the overall look of the eye using a flattering color choice.

Lipstick/gloss/balm - a finishing touch that completes your makeup look and adds an element of allure.

Foundation/Tinted moisturizer - to even out skin tone and conseal imperfections, if necessary.

Makeup Brushes - to expertly apply your makeup (mini brush kit: foundation, powder, brow, shadow & lip brush)

So there you are... six makeup items (& a brush kit) are all that's *necessary* for a "Quick Face"

Just because you don't have any plans to go somewhere or do something in particular doesn't mean you shouldn't be prepared. You don't know what may come up while you're already out-and-about.... and you never know where the day may take you. Always be prepared... keep a "Quick Face" in your bag!

ALSO:

Always chek the date on your makeup to make sure that none of the items you are using are outdated as this can potentially be harmful to your skin. Most face and body items will usually have a two-year shelf life. The term "shelf-life" is an indicator for the time frame in which a product is best used by, prior to potential degrading of any active ingredients.Of course, there may be exceptions to this rule, so be sure to check the date on your makeup. Any outdated makeup items should be tossed in the trash.

Lip Service

Having had the fashion runways usher in the age of NEON - as the new trend for this spring, it turns my mind toward the correlating trend of Neon Makeup, and leaves me wondering... if I dared even to wear neon makeup (like a shade of neon purple eye shadow) what else in the world could I possibly add to such an attention getting look - that wouldn't totally "jump the shark"? Then, it came to me... Lip gloss!

I know, I know... this doesn't exactly sound like a major discovery, however, it is a brain storm of sorts. Think about it; the long standing rule of makeup has always been - to have a focal point - to take the safe route and concentrate on playing up only one aspect of the face (either eyes or lips, but not both). But... if you're wearing neon on your face in the first place... that says all by itself that you are not the one to play it safe; and without overdoing it, a sweet shade of lip gloss or lip stain could only accentuate the positive in your new makeup look.

So I say go ahead and experiment!

A perfectly pouty lip color may be just the thing to balance out that new neon shadow you're dying to wear and bring it into the trend setting realm of the fashion friendly.

Here are a few brands you may want to try:

Happy Friday Evening!

NEON is the new Bling!

This season, the fashion runways are lit with color!...

From clothes to accessories, bright is the new bling, and the bling palette of choice is... NEON. Effervescent yellows, peachs, mint greens and pinks can brighten up not only your wardrobe but your makeup choices as well!

Fiesty new lip glosses and electric new eyeshadow colors are available to help all you fashionistas stay on trend. Check out Bobbi Brown's Neons & Nudes collection for a lippy neon fix. Not-so-new but always true, are MAC's Pigments (one of those "must try" items) - which have tons of color and may be layered for an effect that goes from eye catching to obnoxious (depending on how you feel that day).

Even if neon isn't quite your style, there are lots of other vibrantly lovely lip glosses, eyeshadows and creams to help perk up your spring look. New from Maybelline is the Eye Tattoo, pigmented cream eye shadow line; and under her "True Romance" collection, Kat Von D has a colorful palette called: Mi Vida Loca, available at Sephora.

But in case an eye full of brightly pigmented eyeshadow isn't your thing, there are also some really fun colored eye-liners you can use. For the frugal fashionista, Wet-N-Wild has a line of liquid eyeliners that come in two very cool colors (turquois & plum) and are economically priced.

So, maybe starting with a sassy little strip of color on your eyelid can be your gateway to a colorful makeup adventure.

One thing's for sure, whether you're NEON... or not,  you'll definitely have fun experimenting with CoLoR!!!... and that's what makeup is all about.

*New for Spring*... L'Oreal Color Riche Balm

Specs

  • SPF
  • Moisturizing
  • Lightly tinted color
  • Gloss
  • Lasts up to 8 hrs
  • 8 colors to choose from
  • Price range: $6 - $7.50 (depending on where you buy)

My Findings

  • Glides on very smooth (more of an oil based product, similar to Revlon Lip Butter. Unlike Maybelline Baby lips, which has a creamier base, similar to a lotion)
  • Non-sticky (yay!)
  • Lightly tinted color (unlike Revlon Lip Butter, which has  more of a color pop)
  • Very moisturizing (the Balm stayed on my lips without drying out or flaking, for about 4 hours while running errands - up until lunch time, after which, I re-applied)

I personally don't mind the slick-like feel and the the very light color tint... after all, it is marketed as a lip "balm", so with that being said, this item is being true to it's name.

From a Professional Perspective

I think I will add the L'Oreal's new Balm to my makeup kit. It has just the right amount of glossiness (not *too* shiny)... and the barely-there tint adds a hint of color to the lip, without looking like a lip stick. The perfect thing for one of my natural-look beauty or commercial photo shoots.

Tip

Visit the L'Oreal USA website, complete the How Can I Help You Consultation and receive $1 off any product. Including the new L'Oreal lip Balm!

Makeup for Real Life

Birthday Makeover

This is Gernise...it was her birthday and she was going out on the town, but she wanted to do something a bit more special. So, she decided to get her makeup done professionally and she gave me a call (through a previous client's referral).

Gernise does not wear makeup and was wary of having an overly "made-up" look.

After I asked a few preliminary questions regarding the current condition of her skin (sensitivities, allergies, medications, oily, dry, normal, etc) we discussed eyebrow shape, eyeshadow colors, "natural" makeup vs "glamour" makeup and we even discussed the exact shade of lipstick she'd like to wear. (details matter!)  And finally, I asked her to email a headshot and a picture of what she would be wearing on her birthday, including the shoes.

Ultimately, we settled on the "natural" look for her eyes and an attention getting red lip. Gernise was kind enough to send me a picture of herself while out celebrating her birthday (as seen above).

Such a lovely and confident look... Gernise's eyes have great definition without appearing over-done and her red lips add just the right touch of sass-appeal!

Gernise was very happy with her look!

Did You Know?...

Citrus fruits such as strawberries and oranges (among others) are great for your skin!...

They contain high levels of Vitamin C, which:

  • helps protect and rejuvenate the skin
  • helps protect against collagen loss (which leads to wrinkles)
  • even helps repair sun damage (which leads to age spots)

... be good to the skin you're in!

New *Fav*

Out of all my most recent purchases (see picture below) I do believe the MUFE/Make Up For Ever: Aqua Cream is my favorite.

There's lots to like about Aqua Cream...

The pigmentation is first rate (of course), the consistency has just the right balance of thickness - for good coverage & creaminess - for movability, and it may be used on either the eyes or the lips. Plus, it's it has this metallic quality to it (which gives it a slight sheen that doesn't overpower the richness of the red) aaaaaaaaand... it's Water Proof!... so, your eyes (or lips) will look just as fresh at the end of your night-on-the-town as they did at the beginning.

This red Aqua Cream (in shade #8) is a show stopper and definitely not for the faint of heart... If you top off this deliciously rich red pigment with lip gloss, your lips will definitely attract some very sexy attention!

But just in case you are of the more demure makeup persuasion, there are SEVERAL colors to choose from, so if you're into soft colors, this line still has something for you. (There's this really pretty pink color that I think I'll be picking up in the near future.)

I hope all the makeup maven's out there will decide to give Aqua Cream a try!...

Girlie Treasures!!!

I did some damage at Sephora and *All This* (like I got a ton of stuff, lol) only cost me $100.00!!... after I used my $50 gift card. But I am a happy camper because I love all of my purchases. The key to getting in & out of Sephora with the necessary items & within budget is to make a list. I knew what I was going in there for, which helped me not to impulse buy. Well... for the most part it did. I still bought $10.00 in lip gloss stackable tubes... they were $5 ea - what's a girl to do?? #shrugs shoulders

An Editorial State of Mind

A beautiful beach house, an amazing team and a fab photoshoot... what more could one ask for?

As a makeup artist, the best part for me was having the freedom to customize the makeup look. (very often we are directed up to the smallest detail) But on this shoot the designer allowed me to interpret his concept, and that was a very rewarding experience.

I had a BLAST on this shoot, and the image definitely tells the story. We were all in an editorial state of mind!

The Artistic Side of Makeup

The artistic side of makeup... this project was such fun for me. I was very happy to do makeup that is beyond what is considered 'pretty".

The "Smokey Eye"... and NO, it's not black! lol.

Ahh yes... the most desired eye makeup look in the biz!

A lot of ladies want to try the smokey eye but never have because of their fear of "looking like a raccoon"!... and I can't say that I blame them.

But at the same time, I must admit being surprised by this fact because it lead me to realize just how many ladies still think that a smokey eye has to be black. Well, it doesn't!

Thus, the remedy for the dreaded "raccoon eye" is... (wait for it...) try a different color!

In this picture, a simple gray was used. I know... I know... it's not a major departation from using the classic black eye shadow but in reality, choosing to use a medium or even a dark shade of gray versus using black, is noticeably different and... you won't look like a raccoon!

But don't just take my word on this... try it and see.

The key is to test out different shades of your desired color (ex: light gray, steel gray or charcoal gray) and see which one best compliments your individual skintone. From there, all you have to do is practice your application technique and in no time at all,  you'll be wearing the "smokey eye" with sexy confidence!

The "No Makeup" Look

This is one of my favorite looks...

But I have to say, achieving the "no makeup" look is not as simple as it appears.

In fact, it is one of the most decieving types of makeup looks to execute, because the fine arts of... less-is-more, blending and controled "shine"... must all be incorporated in achieving the look.

Lots of practice and patience are needed... and that's just on doing your own face!

But once you get it "right" (just the way you like it) you'll be totally hooked on how you look - and everyone else will too!!
